Dede Ryan's Background
Armed with a degree in Journalism from the University of Maryland and a love of writing, Dede began professional life as a journalist on Capitol Hill. She held reporting and editorial positions at U.S. News & World Report and Business Publishers, Inc., for more than a decade. She was editor of two newsletters, American Marketplace and Public Transit Report; wrote a series of related monographs; and contributed feature stories to Mass Transit Magazine. In 1990, Dede moved to Boise, Idaho.
She was Director of Marketing and Corporate Communications for Trus Joist, Public Relations Manager for Morrison Knudsen, and Strategic Marketing Manager for Weyerhaeuser. Dede has created award-winning annual reports, newsletters, websites and marketing campaigns. At the same time, she continued her fiction and essay writing, and was a regular contributor to Boise Magazine, McCall Magazine and Home Design. She also wrote restaurant reviews for The Boise Weekly. In 2013, her essay “Coffee to Go” was published in Boise City’s 150 anthology, and her short story, “Circus Man” was published in Brief Grislys, by the Apocryphile Press in Berkeley, California.
“Martini with a Twist,” a philosophical essay, was published October 2001 by Henry Holt and Co. in a collection of short stories edited by Paul Auster in association with National Public Radio’s All Things Considered. Her novel, Takeover, was published in 2007. Both are available on amazon.com. Dede is currently working on a novel set in a California resort restaurant.
